digiKam as a new icon view filters status indicator

During my Christmas holidays, i have processed more than 1000 RAW pictures taken with my Minolta Dynax 5D camera. In my workflow, i create PNG images from MRW raw files using the digiKam editor at 16 bits color depth lossless compressed reference pictures. Later PNG are batch converted to JPEG for publishing or printing.

All my pictures are stored in the same album. I use icon-view filters to work on the right file according to the context, especially the mime-type filter.

I have discovered a usability problem with icon-view filters: it remains active in all views. If you set filters for an Album it will be used as well for another one. But when a setting is right for one album, it can be wrong for another one...

In fact, if one doesn't take a care with icon-view settings when current album is changed, items can disappear virtually from collection. In fact, items are always there, but icon-view do not show it...

Recently, a digiKam user has reported a similar problem in Bugzilla. After long discussion in the mailing-list, we have decided to add an indicator to the status-bar about icon-view filter status...

The indicator shows the global image filter status, encompassing all status-bar filters and all tag filters from the right sidebar. The following color scheme is used:
  • GRAY: no filter is active, all items are visible.
  • RED: filtering is on, but no items match.
  • GREEN: filter(s) matches at least one item.
Any mouse button click over indicator will reset all filters.
