As long as there's some kind of integration at some point I'm happy with whatever DigiKam chooses to run. Nepomuk can really just be the d-bus of metadata. Programs do their own thing internally, but use nepomuk to make some of that data (rating, tags etc) available to other programs. Having Digikam store and search data via a database, but then also export some of it to Nepomuk would be best of both worlds. Fast flexible internal tagging and search, coupled with the ability to see tags and ratings in other apps.
To me though, tagging is really only useful when I can easily back up all my photos and their related tagged data, reinstall my OS and easily restore. It still sounds like Nepomuk has some issues here. :(
